What wine should I get my wife?
The one she orders when it's her choice. If that's Chardonnay, give the best one you can find rather than the biggest: the 2021 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay comes from Old Wente vines planted in 1972, farmed by Kent Ritchie, and made with native yeast and a light hand on oak. Robb Report named it one of the Top 50 California Chardonnays of the Century.

Is Chardonnay a good gift if she doesn't like oaky wine?
Yes, if it's a cool-climate one. Russian River Valley Chardonnay is grown in morning fog, which keeps the acidity fresh. Ours is fermented with native yeast and sees only about a third new French oak, so it reads as citrus, white flowers and minerals rather than butter and vanilla.
